Virtual Camps Overview

The morning focus is on academic enrichment and requires a 2–consecutive week minimum.

Enrichment camps include:

  • Assessment
  • Live session Monday–Friday (except holidays)
  • Personalized lessons

Afternoon camp options focus on specialty topics like art, science, and fitness.

Four types of camps are offered each day: Math, ELA, Specialty, and Kids’ Club. Enroll in one or up to all four types–-the choice is yours!

What Do I Bring to Virtual Camp?

Math Camps

Campers will receive a hand-crafted Math Kit. Occasionally, children may be asked to supplement materials in the kit with everyday objects from around your home.

ELA materials may be sent to you in a packet or made available for digital download.

Supply lists for specialty camps will be posted in the weeks prior to the start of camp. For most camps, you’ll be asked to gather everyday items from around your home.

K–1st Grade ELA Camps

Join us for a summer camp that focuses on phonics, reading, and writing skills. Themes include Stories from Around the World, Graphic Novels, It’s a Mystery, and Magic Realms. Each theme runs for 2 weeks, but content and skills covered vary weekly. 

Topics over the 8 weeks include:

  • Books at the right level of difficulty
  • Core phonics and sight word skills
  • Reading comprehension
  • Letter shapes, size, and spacing
  • Basic punctuation
2nd–3rd Grade ELA Camps

Students in this program focus on becoming fluent and strong independent readers. Themes include Stories from Around the World, Graphic Novels, It’s a Mystery, and Magic Realms. Each theme runs for 2 weeks, but content and skills covered vary weekly. 

Topics covered over the 8 weeks include:

  • Phonics
  • Word-attack skills
  • Word-structure elements
    • Using known words and word patterns to determine meaning (e.g., contractions, plurals, possessives, basic parts of speech, compounds, syllables)
  • Reading fluency
  • Comprehension
    • Extracting and constructing meaning using prior knowledge, applying text information, and monitoring comprehension while reading grade-level text
  • Text analysis
  • Writing process
    • Planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing writing using correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, and other standard conventions appropriate for grade level
4th–8th Grade ELA Camps

In this program, students focus on comprehension, long-word decoding skills, fluency, analyzing text, and reading speed. Students will be grouped based on assessment prior to the start of camp. Themes include Stories from Around the World, Graphic Novels, It’s a Mystery, and Magic Realms. Each theme runs for 2 weeks, but content and skills covered vary by week. 

Skills covered over the 8 weeks include:

  • Analyzing and reading both fiction and nonfiction
  • Applying multiple strategies to navigate different text structures
  • Learning and understanding how to take notes:
    • To record big ideas and supporting evidence
    • To summarize text 
  • Gathering and sharing information learned while reading
  • Explaining how an author uses reasons and evidence to support particular points in a text
  • Engaging in collaborative discussions building on each other’s ideas
  • Using the writing process:
    • To plan, revise, edit, rewrite, and try new techniques 
    • To practice writing that has a clear purpose and an organized structure  
    • To create a narrative with characters and a sequenced plot line  
    • To use sensory detail and pick words that help convey descriptive meaning
    • To provide readers a conclusion to the narrative 

 

 

K–1st Grade Math Camps

TNCS math camps offer a fun, interactive, small-classroom experience. Themes include Math Detectives, Math Explorers, Speed Math, and Problem-Solvers, exploring concepts that adhere to Common Core standards. Each theme runs for 2 weeks, but content and skills covered vary by week. 

Classes meet daily, Monday–Friday, and the camp is offered on a weekly basis. A supplemental math kit will be provided.

Some topics covered over the 8 weeks of math camp include:

  • Whole number relationships
    • Place value
    • Grouping in 10s and 1s
    • Addition and subtraction within 20
    • Linear measurement
  • Geometric shapes
    • Composing and decomposing geometric shapes
2nd–3rd Grade Math Camps

TNCS math camps offer a fun, interactive, small-classroom experience. Themes include Math Detectives, Math Explorers, Speed Math, and Problem-Solvers, exploring math concepts that adhere to Common Core standards.

Classes meet daily, Monday–Friday, and the camp is offered on a weekly basis. A supplemental math kit is provided.

Some topics covered over the 8 weeks of math camp include:

  • Whole number relationships: base 10 notation, addition and subtraction within 100, using standard units of measure, and multiplication and division within 100
  • Unit fractions (numerator = 1)
  • Geometric shapes: two-dimensional shapes, rectangular arrays, and area
4th–8th Grade Math Camps

TNCS math camps offer a fun, interactive, small-classroom experience. Themes include Math Detectives, Math Explorers, Speed Math, and Problem-Solvers, exploring math concepts that adhere to Common Core standards.

Classes meet daily, Monday–Friday, and the camp is offered on a weekly basis. A supplemental math kit is provided.

Some topics covered over the 8 weeks of math camp include:

  • Whole numbers: multi-digit multiplication and division
  • Fractions: fraction equivalence, addition and subtraction, and multiplication and division
  • Decimals: place value in relation to fractions, operations with decimals to the 100th place
  • Geometric shapes: properties and volume
K–3rd: Jr. Illustrators

Join Jia Liu, a professional picture book writer and illustrator, for a week of fun and creative projects that explore the storybook-making process.

Students will experience different formats of storytelling and write and illustrate their own stories.

4th–8th: Master Illustrators

Join Jia Liu, a professional picture book writer and illustrator, for a week of fun and creative projects that explore the storybook-making process.

In this camp, students will write and illustrate their own stories as well as be introduced to book-binding techniques.

K–3rd: Full STEAM Ahead, Jr.

Join Jia Liu for a week of exploration into how science, technology, engineering, and math come together to create art.

4th–8th: Full STEAM Ahead

Join Jia Liu for a week of exploration into how science, technology, engineering, and math come together to create art.

K–3rd: Drawing FUNdamentals

Join Jia Liu, a professional picture book writer and illustrator, for a week of fun and creative drawing instruction. 

This camp will include lessons on drawing techniques such as shading and perspective.

4th–8th: Life Sketch

Join Jia Liu, a professional picture book writer and illustrator, for a week of realistic drawing instruction. 

This camp will include lessons on drawing techniques such as shading and perspective.

K–3rd: Mixed-Up Media, Jr.

Join Jia Liu, a professional picture book writer and illustrator, for a fun week of art activities that explore different art techniques and media, such as painting, collage, and sculpting.

4th–8th: Mixed-Up Media

Kids' Club

Stay social while social distancing. In Kids’ Club, children will participate with their peers in teacher-led games, crafts, and other fun activities.
